More specifically, DepEd defines summative assessment as assessment usually administered toward the end of a learning period to measure mastery of essential learning competencies, with results recorded and used to report achievement. When schools conduct summative tests well—aligned to the Most Essential/target competencies, with clear rubrics and item quality checks—they strengthen fairness, accountability, and instructional decision-making across grade levels.
