TDC Seeks DepEd Dialogue on Three-Term Calendar and Teachers’ Workload

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) has formally requested a dialogue with the Department of Education (DepEd) regarding the implementation of the Three-Term School Calendar System and other urgent concerns affecting public school teachers.

In a letter addressed to Education Secretary Juan Edgardo M. Angara, TDC National Chairperson Benjo G. Basas said the group was submitting its request as the second term began on September 16.

The organization cited feedback gathered from teachers during the first term, including required weekend work, additional and amended reports and forms, compressed timelines, and increasing workloads.

Of particular concern, according to the TDC, is the expectation that teachers accomplish school-related tasks during weekends. The group emphasized that weekends should remain a reasonable time for rest, family and personal matters, religious obligations, and professional development.

The TDC also said that its attached document contains other important concerns that need the Department’s attention. It expressed hope that DepEd would agree to a formal discussion aimed at identifying practical adjustments in the implementation of the three-term calendar.

“We raise these concerns in the spirit of constructive engagement and in defense of the dignity and welfare of the teachers who carry out the Department’s mandate every day,” Basas said.

The group further appealed for a prompt response from DepEd, describing the requested dialogue as an opportunity for both sides to address common concerns and work toward meaningful and practical solutions for public school teachers.

The Three-Term School Calendar System is part of DepEd’s efforts to reorganize the academic year. However, teachers’ groups have continued to call for careful implementation, manageable workloads, and policies that protect teachers’ time, welfare, and dignity.
