DepEd Issues Reminder on Responsible Social Media Use Involving Learners

The Department of Education reminded teachers and other school personnel to exercise professionalism, prudence, and sound judgment when using social media, particularly when their posts involve learners or classroom activities.

Based on the memorandum, teachers are expected to avoid creating or sharing social media content that features learners under their supervision if such content may compromise professional boundaries, expose students to public attention, or use school activities for personal social media purposes.

DepEd stressed that personnel who directly interact with learners hold positions of trust and authority. Because of this, they are expected to protect the privacy, dignity, and safety of students both inside and outside the classroom.

The reminder also points out that social media content involving learners, classroom activities, or school premises should be consistent with legitimate educational purposes and the ethical responsibilities of DepEd personnel.

In simpler terms, teachers should think carefully before posting photos, videos, or stories involving pupils or students. Even if the post is made through a personal account, teachers must still consider whether the content respects the learner’s rights, protects personal information, and upholds the professionalism expected from DepEd employees.
